Although it’s still August, it’s worth remembering that the autumn brings no less than four key dates, during which you need to book well ahead for travels in Mexico: Independence Day, Day of the Dead, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

As students return to classes and the final days of summer draw to a close, people begin to make plans for their autumn get-away.

Here are the four key dates you need to book ahead for travel in Mexico during the autumn:

Independence Day, September 16: September 15th and September 16th are big festive dates in Mexico.  Most major towns and cities celebrate Independence Day festivities and they are especially busy in Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende and nearby Dolores Hidalgo, where the original cry (grito) of independence took place.

Day of the Dead, November 1-2: Day of the Dead is one of Mexico’s biggest and most attended events; it attracts huge attention from Mexicans as well as foreign visitors.  These days, the celebrations also include October 31 (Halloween), and this year, the dates fall on a weekend, so interest in the event, and demand for hotel spaces, is likely to be particularly high.   The best locations to experience Day of Dead celebrations are Oaxaca and Patzcuaro.  Be advised: you absolutely must book in advance for any hope of finding a hotel in Oaxaca or hotel in Pátzcuaro during this time.

Christmas 2008: Christmas is always a popular time of year for travelers: Mexicans leave the capital and head to the colonial cities and beaches, and foreign visitors arrive in droves for festive season celebrations in Mexico.   The Christmas peak season starts around December 15, and ends around January 6, 2009. Booking early is essential to guarantee the best spaces.

New Year’s Eve: Just like Christmas, NYE is one of the busiest days of the year for Mexico’s hotels and resorts.  If you want to see in the New Year in Mexico, particularly at one of the more well-frequented beaches, or colonial cities, you will need to think about booking now.   The best places are usually sold out by the end of October.
