Mexico-EU Free Trade Agreement
In the Summer of 2000, the then President of Mexico, Ernesto Zedillo traveled to Europe for a Summit, at which he also signed a Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and the EU. It was a relatively quiet affair, and was the culmination of years of effort put in by back-stage men and women who crafted the deal.
Introduction
The Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and the European Union agreement, although not widely reported about, will have a significant impact on the relationship between Mexico and the European Union in years to come. Mexico's President wanted to lessen his country's reliance on NAFTA and the USA, and open Mexico up to more of the world.
The agreement that was negotiated between Mexico and the EU is significant, in that Mexico is the only NAFTA member that will have free access to EU Markets in the coming years - and the EU trading block is bigger than that of NAFTA.
Naturally, companies in the EU will also have access to Markets in Mexico, and access to Mexico's resources and capabilities in terms of manufacturing and production.
The Agreement provides for tariffs on wide range of goods and services (with certain, specific sectors excluded) to pass freely between Mexico and the EU and vice-versa, as they do now, between different EU Members.
The potential opportunities are enormous for companies on both sides of the Atlantic.
This section of the Mexperience Business Center has been specially prepared to help you understand the detail of the trade agreement and to point out areas of opportunity which you and your company can investigate.
