Resorts in Mexico

Resorts in Mexico

Almost every Beach destination in Mexico has a selection of Resorts: a hotel (and sometimes, spa) and activity center for you to unwind, relax and enjoy a hassle-free vacation.

This guide will help you to navigate the various options open to you and help you make an informed choice about the type of resort vacation that is right for you.

Mexico's Resorts: An Introduction

Different resorts offer different facilities and attractions depending on their location.

Many people arrive at a resort and spend the entire length of their stay in Mexico at the resort center. This works for some people, especially as most resorts in Mexico are well equipped with a wide range of amenities, services and activity centers, for example, tennis courts, golf courses, fitness centers, and spas; some also include centers where children may enjoy their vacation in a safe, supervised environment.

However, this is Mexico and there is always plenty more to do beyond the resort itself.

Resorts in the southern regions of Mexico, especially Yucatan and Quintana Roo, offer you the opportunity to take day tips to archaeology parks and also a number of eco and adventure activities.

Most of the resorts in Mexico offer great sports fishing opportunities, boat rides, water skiing, paragliding and more.

Resorts on the Pacific Coast offer some of the most inspiring sunsets you’ll witness. The Grand Velas Resort & Spa in Puerto Vallarta is one example.

The Baja region in Mexico also offers stunning resorts coupled with sunset cruises, whale watching (in season), and great sports fishing opportunities.

Many of the higher-end resorts now offer first class spa facilities on site - you can read about the different spa options open to you by reading the Guide to Spas in Mexico.

Different resorts offer different facilities; catering for different requirements and budgets.

This guide will introduce you to the various regions where you'll find good resorts in Mexico. By clicking on the links, you can learn about the individual places and from there you can find a resort to match your needs.

Most Popular Resorts

Cancun

The most popular resort destination in Mexico is Cancun. Cancun is pre-planned and totally self-contained, but there are many attractions nearby especially Archaeological Areas and Adventure and Eco Tourism attractions, so be sure to explore the options with Mexperience if you choose Cancun as your resort destination.

Puerto Vallarta

The second most visited resort is Puerto Vallarta. On Mexico's Pacific Coast, Vallarta is a popular destination with foreigners and Mexican families alike. With it's charming and distinct colonial city-by-the-sea feel, Puerto Vallarta lies at the foot of the Sierra Madre mountains, providing several opportunities for Adventure Experiences to be enjoyed from the area.

Acapulco

Another popular resort that is undergoing something of a renaissance is Acapulco, with two distinct areas - the 'old town' - (which in its heyday was the playground of the rich and famous) and the new, more recently developed (and more exclusive) "Punto Diamante" (Diamond Point) further south along the coast. Acapulco also offers a number of Adventure Experiences that may be enjoyed in the local area.

Huatulco, Loreto

Two other Mexican resort destinations which have sprung up in recent years are Huatulco (in the State of Oaxaca on the Pacific Ocean) and Loreto (see Baja California Sur below).

Huatulco offers low-rise resorts with plenty of activities both in-resort and in the surrounding area. It also has an excellent (albeit pricey) golf course.

Loreto is one of Mexico's newest resort areas, offering first class facilties, amenities and activities on Mexico's Baja peninsula.

Resorts in Paradise: Baja California Sur

The Baja Peninsula is a favorite destination for many Americans: not least because of its proximity - just south of the state of California, USA.

The area itself is truly magnificent: offering a great climate, and first-class facilities. The most popular pastimes at the resorts here include golf, fishing, eco and adventure trips, as well as an endless variety of water sports. It's a perfect destination to find a perfect Nature and Adventure Experience

The Main Resort destinations in Baja are Loreto, LaPaz, Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.

Resorts on the Yucatan Peninsula

Besides Cancun (mentioned earlier), Mexico's southern peninsula of Yucatan offers a variety of high quality resorts to enjoy.

These include two islands: Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. Just off the mainland, they tend to be quieter and more laid back. Isla Mujeres is very popular with honeymooners, and after the day-trippers leave (early evening) the Island takes on a more relaxed, laid back and serene feel. Cozumel is larger, more commercial - especially when the cruise ships are in dock. If you like SCUBA diving, Cozumel is a top destination to consider; although it also offers some high quality resort-style hotels next to the best beach on the island - about 16Km from the town center.

Playa del Carmen is smaller (but growing yearly) with a more rustic feel about it. Playa offers travelers and vacationers a simple and more cultured resort vacation; you can enjoy top quality resort hotels in Playa without the hyper-commercial feel of nearby Cancun.
