  • Temporary Residency card exchanges must be filed by the card holder at an immigration office in Mexico; requests cannot be filed at Mexican consulates abroad and/or by proxies.
  • The request for exchange from temporary to permanent must be filed in the 30-day window before the expiry date printed on the current card. The request cannot be filed sooner.
  • If your existing card has expired you might be able to file for renewal in Mexico—read this article for details—but any years you have accrued under Temporary Residency will be lost and you will not be able to file for an exchange to permanent residency at this time.
