When you hold legal residency status in Mexico (Temporary or Permanent) you need to file notifications at the local immigration office when there’s a change in your personal circumstances.

Legal residency in Mexico carries certain rights and obligations.  One of the obligations is that you must notify the local immigration office when you experience a change in certain personal circumstances.

Types of notifications

These are the events which legal residents must notify the INM about:

  • Change of home address.
  • Change of name.
  • Change of nationality.
  • Change of marital status. (Marriage, divorce, death of spouse or common-law partner.)
  • Change of economic activity, e.g. change of employer, or changing from not working to employment, or opening to a business, etc.

Notifications types must be:

  • filed separately for each applicant;
  • filed in person, at an immigration office in Mexico; and
  • made in separate filings (in the case where two or more notification types are being filed together, e.g. change of address and change of marital status);
  • submitted within 90 calendar days of the change.
  • Notifications cannot be filed at Mexican consulates abroad.

Filing of Notification Changes at the immigration office in Mexico

Our associates offer a tele-assistance facilitation service that enables you to attend the immigration office in Mexico yourself fully prepared with all the forms and other paperwork duly completed and ready to file your notification for change in any of the circumstances listed above.

Filing notifications requires the completion of a form or forms, writing a covering letter (in Spanish), and might also require additional supporting documents that provide evidence of your change, e.g. marriage certificates, etc.  Supporting documents will need to be notarized/apostilled and translated into Spanish if they were not issued in Mexico.

Not all change notifications require supporting documentary evidence. Our associate will advise you according to your situation.
